Jacques Ranciere on Method Train by PhD In One Night

    Juillet 2020/ July 2020

    Jacques

    [English version]

    Dear Ivana,

For me, the "train method" is first of all the Jacotot method: the affirmation that you can do what you don't have a title for: films, editing, collage (with all the differences in training and practice between participants); the affirmation that doing is talking and speaking is doing (I am thinking of the gloves makers of Grenoble and the "words" of their gloves of which Jacotot speaks in front of the spools of thread from Nina's film or the little colored balls with which Lisa indicated the movements of a choreography immanent in the way each of us makes his body speaking); the correlative refusal of the division between the disciplines and the attempt to apply the "all is in everything" while widening and creating connections starting from particular points (the Jacobean train is par excellence the train which one takes in motion ) but also by your idea of the points of light and the assemblages of words which shines the light of emancipation. All this is the price of films, their diversity and their revival in the "locomotive".

Of course the "train", as you set it in motion, wants to specify the jacotot method as a method of the link between the heterogeneous and thereby bring it closer to consecrated artistic practices such as collage - with what it involves, a part left to the randomness of the assembly and to the randomness of the encounter - and the assembly - with what it involves, conversely, counting on the relation and anticipating the effect. On the one hand, you ask everyone to throw their bottle into the sea from a few common landmarks. Thus, the film on choral communities and the film on Cyprus do not seem to owe anything to any guidance you have given. On the other hand, you use the models offered by the dada or surrealist collage and by the dialectical montage. Dada, on the one hand, and Eisenstein, on the other, frame the traveler and experimenter Medvedkin. And, apart from the connection between the different films, there are the procedures of connection which are at work within each of them. For example, how was the structure of the film constructed which links Riika's chamber opera with the Red Brigades and above all with the 'standing man'. Is it her idea as the director of this wagon or your idea as the manager of the train? Likewise, you say that you asked Nina to take care of Blanqui. But how was the link made between Blanqui, the Commune- in which he did not participate - the Peter Watkins film and his conception of television? Or the link between the prisoner Blanqui and the prisoner of the Brussels prison? What exactly is collective in the choices that governed the internal organization of the films? Sometimes also, it seems that the link is a coup de force: I think of the ascent - from train to train - towards Lenin's sealed wagon which is not a very glorious episode in revolutionary history but which serves to ascend towards a Lenin chess player and to the place which is established there with Tzara and therefore with Dada. Sometimes we lose the link on the way and we wonder for example what Norman Béthune is doing there.

An essential aspect of the train is of course its overdetermination. It is a metaphor for communication and in particular for editing. Train is a cinema icon. It is the metaphor of movement in general and of history as an oriented movement. And your train, from this point of view, is also an anti-train which varies the times and rhythms to question this Time of historical revolutionary necessity (which nevertheless remains very present).

This train of films which speaks of the train of history is obviously a strong way of linking the "form" of work to its "content". This link is consubstantial with the project to create a bridge between lawyers and artists. This is what is in the program "Dada, law and Rancière" (with the small problem that "law" is more rigid and more restrictive than our "right"). This is what participants in Train method have tried to do going through state violence, resistance, terrorism, prison ... As you know, I was reserved as to the contribution that Dada could bring to your project of junction. It seemed to me that the trials of Dada were a false good trace. You told me that it would take up little space. But all in all, it seems to me that Dada did not serve you much and that you even had to force a little to introduce it. The great provocative proclamation of the Dadaist central committee itself belongs to the avant-garde tradition that it parodies and there is an opposition between this tradition and the jacotist approach that you camouflage a bit. That is at least my feeling and I understand that we can discuss all of that.

I will stop here today some general reflections which I do not know if they will be very useful to you.

    Friendship
    Jacques
